Also known as plates or false teeth, dentures are used to replace missing teeth in the mouth. They can be utilized to replace a few teeth to replace the whole set of teeth depending on what the overall goal is. The two material of choice is acrylic (plastic) and metal. Often the dentist will recommend what is suitable for your circumstance. While dentures take some getting used to, and will never feel exactly the same as one’s natural teeth, today’s dentures are natural looking and more comfortable than ever.
How long before I get used to my Dentures?
If you have previously worn a denture then the new denture often does not feel too foreign. However, if you have never worn a denture before then it may feel awkward or uncomfortable for the first few weeks or even months. Eating and speaking with a new denture will take practice.
Minor irritation or soreness is not unusual but if you experience excessive pain or ulcers please contact your friendly Wellington Dentist to have the denture adjusted.
How long do Dentures last?
Due to normal wear and tear from everyday use, over a period of time, your denture may need to be relined or remade. The average life of a denture is about 5-10 years depending on how you use and maintain it.
