A dental crown or bridge is a tooth-shaped cover that is placed over an existing tooth. It is done so to protect and strengthen a structurally weaken tooth from further deterioration. They are usually fabricated outside of the mouth in a dental laboratory so often will require at least two appointments.
Why do I need a Crown?
• Replace a large filling when there isn’t enough tooth remaining
• Protect a weak tooth from fracturing
• Restore a fractured tooth
• Cover a discoloured or poorly shaped tooth
• Cover a tooth that has had root canal treatment
How are Crowns and Bridges made?
After careful examination and discussion between yourself and the dentist, a decision is made on whether to get a crown or a filling.
Before either a crown or a bridge can be made, the tooth (or teeth) must be reduced in size to create space for the crown or bridge to fit over top. The dentist will take an impression of the reduced tooth to provide the dental laboratory with an exact mould of your teeth.
The lab uses the impression provided to make the crown or bridge in the material your dentist specifies and the shade that was predetermined. During this fabrication period, the patient has a temporary crown made by the dentist just so nothing is exposed. When the permanent crown or bridge is ready, the temporary is removed and the new crown or bridge is cemented over the tooth or teeth.
The most important step you can take to ensure the longevity of your crown or bridge is to practice good oral hygiene. By brushing and flossing around it like a normal tooth it prevents unwanted gum disease or decay.

She had noticed her front teeth wearing down becoming shorter and also they started to break. She was also unhappy with the large gaps between her front teeth which have put her off from smiling completely. After careful treatment planning and discussion, we have decided to go for crowns on her front six teeth. Below are pictures of before and after treatment. Incredible transformation.
